On the morning of October 31 (yes, that was Halloween!!!) Food for Friends co-sponsored a Mobile Pantry at Valley View Church in St Charles. This post provides a recap of the event.
The St Charles serving event was a success even though it was a cold & rainy Halloween morning. We partnered with HELPS, Chapel Church, and the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) on this event. NIFB sent a food distribution truck and we distributed food from this truck from 10 am to 12 pm.
Despite the pouring rain and 44 degree temperatures, 22 volunteers (12 from Food for Friends!) had tons of fun spreading cheer to all those who came. The impact was significant: we served over 150 families with packages that contained groceries for 2 weeks!! Even more than that, everyone left with a smile on their face, including the volunteers!
The volunteers that come out for these type of serving events experience the joy of giving. Although it was cold and wet, the volunteers managed to keep a smile throughout the event. We thank all the volunteers for braving the elements of the weather to serve the needy.
We will end this article with a story from the event. We had a sign near the entrance to the parking lot that read “Free Food”. One specific gentleman was having a bad week ad his employer had reduced his work hours and he was wondering how this was going to impact his budget. He was driving by and saw the sign we had by the parking lot entrance. He decided to drive into the parking lot to see what it was all about. He was greeting by one of our volunteerd who greeted him and told him about our offer of free groceries. The volunteer had him register and within a few minutes was receiving two weeks worth of groceries. The gentleman was so overwhelmed and grateful for the groceries, thanking everyone. All the volunteers experienced this joy with him. It was a blessing to know we made an impact on this gentleman’s life.
