Light of Christmas shines brightly at San Miguel School in Chicago

Note:  On December 10, 2016 Food For Friends volunteers found their way to San Miguel School Chicago for a Christmas serving event.  The following is a report on the event from our President, Dan Herzog.

san-miguel-december-2016Saturday December 10th there was a beautiful reflection of the light of Christmas at San Miguel School in the Chicago “Back of the Yards” neighborhood.

Over 200 people (mostly excited children!!) celebrated the good news of Jesus birth and were served a delicious warm Christmas meal by 14 festive Food For Friends volunteers who came from all parts of Chicago land.

The school leaders said a beautiful prayer of gratitude to Food For Friends, the volunteers and blessing of the food.

Just as everyone was finishing their meal, Santa and Mrs. Claus surprised the children with a visit from the north pole.  They went around the room and greeted every table of visitors, handing out candy canes and snapping pictures.  You can imagine the reaction from the children.  The children could hardly contain the smiles and you can be sure their thoughts turned to the upcoming visit from the man in the red suit on his sleigh in just 14 days.

After the meal was served, some of the children’s Christmas energy spilled over into running and chasing each other around the room as the tempo all of a sudden accelerated with dreams of the upcoming holiday.

But most important, there was was a keen sense of celebrating Jesus, and the light of the hope God brings to us through the birth of His Son. Yesterday, we were the church, and Gods light shown bright through each and every volunteer, and that light was reflected back through the warm smiles and laughter as we celebrated together.

I’d like to say a special thanks to those volunteers who gave up part of their Saturday during this busy holiday season to give back to this special community partner that means so much to the Food For Friends efforts.
