Blue Bag Event Recap: Christ Redeemer Church in Elgin

On Saturday, November 18th, despite the weather (rain, wind and cold) Food For Friends, partnered with volunteers from Christ Redeemer Church in Elgin to assemble 130 Food For Friends Blue Bags for Thanksgiving.

As the assembly line formed to stuff the bags, Food For Friends Board Member Christina Chacon publically thanked all the volunteers for carving out a portion their day to help serve those in need.  After that, the exciting process of stuffing all the bags began!

All volunteers were in good spirits, smiling as each bag was packed. Each bag contained a couple of cans of corn, green beens, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, brownie mix, hot cocoa mix and a frozen turkey.

Pastor Eddie Rivera huddled with all the volunteers and prayed for all the families that would be receiving a bag.

After all the Blue Bags were stuffed with all that yummy Thanksgiving food, we passed out a few bags to Christ Redeemer Church families in need.   The rest of the bags were distributed in Elgin, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Streamwood, and other nearby cities.

A special thanks to Food For Friends volunteer Martin Cervantes for picking up and delivering the turkeys that are the featured part of the Blue Bag.

Finally, we would like to thank Pastor Eddie Rivera for his unwaivering support of those in need and for the continued partnership we have with the Christ Redeemer Church (Iglesia Cristo Redentor).  We recently received an email from Pastor Riviera and have attached that email directly below….

Dear all at Food For Friends:

Thank you so much for the opportunity and the blessings.

There are many great stories to this event here are few I like to share.

One family that received a blue bag was an elderly couple with very low income.  The husband was just released from the hospital after few weeks in treatment with a life threatening event. His adult daughter is fitting a battle against cancer. They are a Christ loving family and I know they are thankful for the blessings.

Among other families blessed with the food bags were four families that recently came from Puerto Rico after being displaced by the damage caused by hurricane Maria.

And one other family is from the local school district from the student homeless program was also blessed with a food bag.

We received many thanks from the community.  The volunteer are super excited and already planning for next year if it is God’s will.

Also like to share that few of the local pastor are asking me how to get involved next year, I will coordinate with those as time get closer to next even. I also have a friend pastor in Aurora that is interested in participating on next year even.

God’s willing we will be able to to this again.

On behalf Iglesia Cristo Redentor and the Elgin community; I like to express are must sincere thanks. May the Lord bless all that are involved with the Food for Friend ministry. We pray that the merciful Lord continue to provide to you and bless you in abundance in the coming year 2018.
