On December 15, 2018, Food For Friends participated as a partner for the third year in a row to throw a holiday luncheon for the community of Elgin.  The article below was submitted by Dan Herzog, President of Food For Friends.  For more pictures of the event, see our Facebook Album titled 2018Dec15 Elgin Christmas  Lunch..

On December 15, 2018, over 40 Food For Friends volunteers served up a great holiday dinner for the community of Elgin.

Elgin’s Dream Foods along with Together We’re Elgin and the City of Elgin held the third annual Christmas lunch on Saturday 12/15 at the Hemmens Cultural Center.  Food For Friends once again supported this event, which serves up a holiday meal to those in the Elgin Community that are food challenged.  The event brings together the homeless and area residents to enjoy a meal and mingle with each other,

As guests entered the room, holiday music and the sweet smell of food filled the air.   Over 40 Food For Friends volunteers worked over three shifts.  They worked alongside other volunteer who performed many different tasks, including cooking the food, setting up cookie and drink tables and serving the steady flow of guests from all walks of life.

Before the meal got underway, a special blessing was said to bless the food and then everyone prayed for all the guests.  It was then time to eat and the guests came up to the serving line.  There was a long line of trays of ham, turkey tetrazzine,   penne pasta with peas,  mixed veggies, baked buttery potatoes and mixed greens salad.

Guests loved the different foods and many came back for seconds.  Our volunteers heard many “Thank Yous” and “This food is great” and “Thanks for being here” as guests came through the line.

A special blessing was prayed over the meal and all the people, and a special guest SANTA CLAUS was there to hand out gifts to all the children.

“Indeed it was a very special day” said one new female FFF volunteer.  I felt so good in my heart knowing I am able to give back some time to this city where I grew up and so good to see community coming together”

Food For Friends donated 50 Hams for this event.  We are thankful to all those who donate to our mission throughout the year, which allows us to support events like this.

Merry Christmas.
