A Holiday meal at the House of Restoration… and 100 Turkeys & Blue Bags!

Food For Friends partnered up with House of Restoration and Vineyard Church of Elgin to serve over 220 people

Food For Friends partnered again with House of Restoration for their annual Christmas Party on Saturday, December 15, 2018.  Approximately 220 guests attended the event, which was held at the Vineyard Church in Elgin, IL.

Food For Friends provided 100 frozen turkeys and the blue bags to the House of Restoration team, which then filled those blue bags with additional food items so the family can make a full holiday meal at home.

House of Restoration, founded in 2001, serves Elgin and surrounding communities as an important resource to individuals and families experiencing hardship and loss.  This includes the homeless community which they serve by running an emergency winter shelter in the city of Elgin.

As in all our other serving events, Food For Friends volunteers and House of Restoration volunteers partnered up in order to set up for the event.  This included arranging tables, chairs, putting up decorations, filling the 100 blue bags and setting up for the meal.

As guests arrived, they were treated to a meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and hot dogs for the kids. Dessert included a holiday cake.

As the meal was finishing up, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived and as you can expect, the children were very happy.  The families received gifts for their children.   In addition, there were a few bikes that were raffled off to a few lucky children, who became very excited when their name was announced.

As the guests left, they were each handed a  frozen turkey (provided by Food For Friends) and one of our branded Blue Bags filled with food items donated by House of Restoration.  In all, 100 turkeys and Blue Bags were given out to the guests.

A special thank you to our lead volunteer Joan Richards and our other volunteers Andrew, Nick, Sherri, and Jeff, they were awesome!  And a special thanks to our contacts Lucy and Peter at the House of Restoration (HOR) for the opportunity to serve.

Food For Friends….

This is a God-driven event and Lucy and Peter are faithful servants. This was definitely an event centered around Jesus and the message of Christmas. The volunteers were wonderful, they were champs setting up, serving, cleaning up, cutting cake and distribution of the bags.

I have been blessed this year by being involved with Food For Friends again and thank you for that. God Blessed us richly.

The following text also came in via a combination of email and Facebook posts from Lucy Olivera of the House of Restoration.

We are honored to be collaborating with Food for Friends and we pray for many blessings over them.  Thank you for the 100 turkeys and for the awesome volunteers.  We couldn’t have done this part without you.

I also want to thank all of our partners that made this happen.  From the cake that was donated to the pasta trees that were given.  From the hot dogs that were donated to the turkeys that were donated. And especially for the the toys that were donated.  This cannot happen without any of our partners. My may the Lord bless them.  May the Lord increase them in this new year from us to you.

Thank you and Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New year’s.

Much love,

Lucy Olivera
