Event Recap: Irish You Were Here!! March 23, 2019

Food For Friends partnered with Together We’re Elgin on Saturday, March 23, 2019 for a community dinner in Elgin.  The article below was sent in by Jeff Turner, Founder of Together We’re Elgin.  Jeff Turner is co-founder of Dream Foods, owner-operator of In the Neighborhood Dream Deli at the Gail Borden Public Library and has overseen Elgin community dinners for about a decade.  For more pictures from this event, go to our album on Facebook titled 2019March23 – Irish You Were Here!.

Around 200 people were served at the March 23, 2019 “Irish You Were Here” event in Elgin

Our second annual St. Patrick’s Day Community Dinner, held at First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in Elgin, was another huge success.

It is always fulfilling to see the community come together to share food and fellowship.  This year, I noticed that our homeless population had a much larger presence.  That is good and bad.  Great that they were here for a meal that they really needed but also sad that we have that large homeless population that needs to be served.

On site for the dinner we served around 200 people and leftover food was sent to Wayside group to further assist in feeding over 150 more from our community.

Volunteers were in full force and all geared up to help when they got there.  As always we had a strong presence from Food For Friends which is always a great help.  In addition, 250 pounds of corned beef was donated to us by the Food For Friends organization.

Our partner organizations are so important to the success of these events and a simple thank you is not enough.  In addition to volunteers and donations, they also help with advice on planning, marketing and execution.  This partnership was forged when Dane Duval from the Salvation Army put us in contact with Dan Herzog from Food For Friends years ago.  This partnership is the single most important of all.  We are eternally grateful.

That being said, there is still more work to do.  At Together We’re Elgin, we are currently building our steering committee and would appreciate any help and guidance.  We are looking for help with outreach and marketing, volunteer systems, overall event execution leads, kitchen, and forward vision thinkers who have new ideas.  Please contact me at 847-239-0717 or email at TogetherWereElgin@gmail.com.

Our next event will be the summer BBQ held at the Wing Park Pavillion in Elgin In August.  Details will follow as they become available.

Thanks again for all of your support and blessings to all.
