On Thursday, July 4, 2019, H.E.L.P.S Ministry hosted their annual cookout for the community of Batavia. This was the first time that Food For Friends partnered with H.E.L.P.S Ministry for this event. The H.E.L.P.S Ministry is a chapel, food pantry and shelter that serves St. Charles and Elgin providing food and clothing to those in need.
The cookout was held at the Engstrom Family Park, 326 Millview Dr., Batavia, IL 60510. The day started out hot and it got even hotter, with the temperatures being over 90 degrees. The members from HELPS kicked into gear. They unloaded everything needed for the cookout and quickly went about setting up and beginning to cook all the food.
Community members began streaming into the park with smiles on their faces, ready for a fun event. Kids were running around, laughing and having a great time. Some people played games (such as bags and baseball) and others were engaged in deep conversations.
Looking out over the whole scene, it looked like thousands of people. In the end, we served around 300 people. They all dined on grilled chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, pork chops and a number of side dishes.
This event gave us the opportunity to talk to many individuals about Christ’s love – including a girl who was excited about getting baptized, and a grandmother who almost cried when asked if she needed any prayer. The evening turned out great, ending with an amazing firework show.
One thing is for certain: The offer of a picnic with provided food really brings people together. It opens the opportunity for conversations and relationship building. Many thanks to Food For Friends, who provided the food for the event H.E.L.P.S. appreciates the partnership it has with Food For Friends.
