Food For Friends partnered with The Chapel Lake Zurich on July 20th to host a Mobile Food Pantry, which provided 160 households with a week’s worth of groceries.  This event marks the fifth year in a row where Food For Friends has connected with Lake Zurich and its surrounding communities through this ongoing Mobile Food Pantry effort.

Despite a severe heat advisory, volunteers brought amazing energy and could not be deterred as they connected to guests and built new friendships through out the day.  Whether it was breaking food boxes down, shopping with guests, or taking time to pray one-on-one in the parking lot, it was clear that hope was also being restored to many who looked for a few hours of relief from the heat, as well as their worries.
As the event drew near to a close, volunteers were asked to sign up to take groceries away to “gift” to someone who might be in need across their network.  Some were apprehensive to the call, but courageously stepped into the uncertainty.
This act of kindness and volunteerism resulted in many heart-warming stories, some we will never hear about.   However, a few days after the event, one volunteer shared their story with me,  To quote from their email:   “Thank you for encouraging me to take a bag of food last Saturday.  It fed 3 families who are so very grateful.  One family, in their eighties, ate a tomato for dinner the night before and was so very excited to actually have something of sustenance.”
The email continued:   “Another family was so grateful for macaroni and cheese.  Something so simple is so appreciated. The last family was so excited to have ingredients to make a spaghetti dinner (we provided them with ground beef and sauce).  I am so grateful and humbled I was able to touch a few people with simple things that seemed to make a big difference”.
For those of you who have not considered serving at a Mobile Food Pantry event, please consider volunteering at one of our upcoming events.   There is always a list of upcoming serving opportunities on our  “Events” page.
