On Saturday, August 17, 2019, for the second time, Food For Friends participated in the annual “Back to School BBQ Bash” in Elgin at Wing Park Pavilion.  This was a very large serving event sponsored by several partners.

Thanks to our great set of volunteers for this event who worked tirelessly for four hours in hot & humid weather… but still had big smiles on their faces!

Food For Friends donated 250lbs pork, 5 gallons of BBQ sauce and 80lbs of cabbage blend for slaw.  Also, a big thank you to Gonnella Baking for donating the 2000 mini slider buns.

It was a very well attended event for the children of Elgin, we served food non-stop for four hours. Special Thank you to the ALL the volunteers, especially those who worked long hours in the humidity.

Food For Friends provided 19 volunteers and teamed up with Jeff Turner and Dream Foods, City of Elgin to serve hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, fried fish, egg rolls, chips, cookies, water, and juice boxes to over 2000 people!  Yes…  2000!

The event offered the community of Elgin free food, entertainment, games, face-painting, free hair cuts and styling, and backpacks filled with school supplies for the children.

The excitement was all day long, with several groups providing entertainment at the bandshell.  The singers and dancers were of all ages including children from church groups singing, and different cultural groups singing and/or dancing for the crowds.  The list of groups performing included the Funk Brotherz, Accidentally on Purpose, Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl, the choir of Second Baptist Church of Elgin and more.

All participants seemed to appreciate the event and stayed to eat and enjoy the last of the warm summer days before heading back to school next week.   Leftovers went to local food pantries and service organizations.

Thanks to our hard working volunteers who served food for over four hours on a hot humid day.  Thanks to  Karen and her friend Mike, Dean and Lynn, Rich and Cathy and Julie  (and her two kids), FFF Board Member Christina (and her kids) and our President Dan Herzog for serving.  We know you left the event with a smile on your face knowing you connected with our guests and gave them HOPE.
