Event Recap: Blue Bags and Frozen Turkeys Distributed To H.E.L.P.S. Community

As mentioned in our article ” Event Recap: Cristo Rey Thanksgiving Blue Bag Event ” Food For Friends partnered with Pastor Eddie Rivera and the church members at Elgin’s Cristo Rey the Saturday before Thanksgiving in order to assemble Blue Bags and distribute them along with a frozen turkey to needy members of the surrounding communities.

A H.E.L.P.S. volunteer hands off a turkey and Food For Friends Blue Bag filled with all the groceries needed for a Thanksgiving meal.

Some of those turkeys and Blue Bags were distributed to community members who rely on the H.E.L.P.S. ministry in St. Charles. Because of all the support for this event, we reached 25 families. We have given these families an opportunity to create family memories of a Thanksgiving meal with a juicy turkey and all the sides on their table.

Food For Friends received the following note from the lead H.E.L.P.S. coordinator for this food distribution event.

Thanks to Food For Friends, 25 families in our H.E.L.P.S community were blessed with frozen turkeys and a Blue Bag filled with all the food necessary to make the traditional Thanksgiving side dishes. H.E.L.P.S volunteers delivered the turkeys on Saturday and Sunday to families who were surprised by these unexpected gifts.

The recipients of the meals are proud members of our community, but are having difficulty making ends meet due to unemployment, under employment, and health problems. All 25 of them were extremely grateful.

A new volunteer this year helped deliver the meals and was so eager to go deliver them that he left the meal his wife just served on the table and ran out the door so he could deliver the gift of a Thanksgiving turkey and blue bag to our community members. Lesson learned: Not only are the recipients blessed but the person delivering is blessed also. It’s amazing how food can change someone’s life!
