On Thursday November 28, 2019, Food For Friends partnered with Together We’re Elgin, In The Neighborhood Deli, The First United Methodist Church of Elgin and the local Salvation Army for the annual Elgin Community Thanksgiving dinner.
This annual serving event, held at First United Methodist Church of Elgin, is designed to feed up to 1,500 of the city’s less fortunate and families every year on Thanksgiving day.
The driving force for the event is Jeff Turner, the owner of In The Neighborhood Deli. Mr. Turner has organized the community meal for Thanksgiving the past 12 years. Food For Friends has been a long time partner of this event and provides close to 1,200 lbs of turkey for each event.
An event this big requires many people behind the scenes as well as people volunteering to serve. A total of 60 volunteers from Food For Friends worked a shift helping either in the serving line, back in the kitchen area or in some other capacity. And there were many other volunteers from the community, including people from local churches, high school students getting in their service hours and even representatives from the local police department.
Community members are encouraged to bake and drop off baked pies and other desserts the morning of the event. One of the really neat traditions at this event is that children from the community are invited to help during all shifts. They children come early during set up in order to color the place mats, roll silverware in the napkins. After people get their main course, the children can also be seen running trays of desserts and drinks to the crowd.
Food For Friends volunteers love this serving event and tell us they find it extremely rewarding as a way to give back to the community. In fact a number of our volunteers have made this event a part of their Thanksgiving tradition, serving with their family members.
A special thanks to thanks to all our donors, partners and volunteers that all come together to help make this event a success. We look forward to supporting this event next year.
Thanks also to Dane Duval for sending in pictures from the event. See many more pictures at our Facebook album 2019-11-28 Elgin Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
