On Saturday, April 18 , 2020, Food For Friends partnered with the Life Bridge Community Church and Cristo es la Roca in Wauconda for a Mobile Food Pantry to serve their community at large.
Cristo es la Roca and Life Bridge Church served over 245 families (totaling 977 individuals and 443 children). We were unsure of how to do this event due to COVID-19 but with the help of Ken and his crew, who serve at The Chapel Lake Zurich, volunteers from FFF and the support of the church we were able to create a drive thru. We estimate there were about 30-40 volunteers across LifeBridge, The Chapel, FFF and Wauconda Schools.
Cristo es la roca and Life Bridge were taking a leap into unchartered waters but with their faith and eyes fixed on a purpose all the volunteers and leaders did a spectacular job. Volunteers and leaders know of the importance of not only giving a handout but giving a hand up to their guests and given the circumstances, they were unsure of how to do more than provide a box of food. Surely so, we all learned the power of smiling with our eyes. The key is adding little crinkles around our eyes to show that we care for them and their families.
Many of the families that visited today were sent from the local schools of Wauconda. When parents went to pick up meals from their children’s school, they received notice about our food drive. This food drive was especially important to those families that were turned away when school meals ran out. Fortunately, Life Bridge and Cristo Es La Roca grabbed their masks and gloves and were able to provide a box of delicious food for a lot of those families.
Though we could not have these long conversations with the people we serve and the people that serve alongside us, the love was all around. Seeing crinkles around the eyes of the people around us was enough to send a positive message that connected us and gave us hope.
Big thank you to all our volunteers and all our sponsors that make events like this possible through all the uncertainty going on around us. We are blessed to have you as part of our Food For Friends family.
