On Saturday, May 16, 2020, Food For Friends partnered with the The Chapel Lake Zurich and the Northern Illinois Food Bank for a Mobile Food Pantry to serve the Northwestern Suburban area. The following article was sent in by Ken Rasbid, Food For Friends Board Member. More pictures from this event can be found on our Facebook page at the album titled “2020-05-16 The Chapel Lake Zurich Mobile Food Pantry ”
We have held many Mobile Food Pantry events at The Chapel, but not one was during a pandemic. Because of that, this event turned into drive-through experience. But that did not diminish the value of this serving event for all of our “Friends”. Nor did it diminish the experience one bit for all the volunteers.
In fact, there was tremendous support from volunteers at both Food For Friends and the Lake Zurich community, including The Chapel Lake Zurich Mobile Food Pantry leadership team. All the 75+ volunteers and leaders did a spectacular job pulling together to safely hand-out groceries, while finding small chances to love on the guests and each other.
The need was very obvious as the cars filled the parking lot beyond capacity and our ‘Friends’ waited patiently for the process to unfold. As each car came through the line, everyone stayed in their car as our volunteers loaded the food into their car, based on their individual needs. All those who received our gifts of food were grateful and they let all the volunteers know that.
In the end, groceries were provided to 247 families, total 896 individuals, including 370 children!! Think of the impact we all had on these families…. it is amazing!
Big thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors that make events like this possible, despite the uncertainty all around us. We feel blessed to have you part of our Food For Friends family!
