Event Recap: H.E.L.P.S Ministry July 4th Cookout

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, H.E.L.P.S Ministry hosted their annual July 4th cookout for the community.   Food For Friends supported the cookout with volunteers and food.

The H.E.L.P.S Ministry is a chapel, food pantry and shelter that serves St. Charles and Elgin providing food and clothing to those in need.

Guests participate in the 4th of July cookout celebration just prior to the firework show.

Typically, this annual fourth of July celebration is hosted in Batavia and includes a nice view of the local firework show..  Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Batavia firework show was canceled. As a result, H.E.L.P.S. decided to host its annual cookout outside the Ministry’s building with some modifications to allow for social distancing.

Food For Friends volunteers Nick, Naela, Akiles and Christina showed up at noon to assist H.E.L.P.S. Ministry volunteers in the activities required to prepare for the event. Tables and chairs were spaced to allow for social distancing. Volunteers sanitized all the tables & chairs.

As guests started to arrive, the July 4th cookout atmosphere began to appear. A variety of music greeted them… from Christian to contemporary.  Angelo from the Ministry was on the grill, cooking up hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken wings, and polish sausage. Our volunteers helped set up the food tables. In addition to all the trimmings for the cooked food, we also provided large trays of stir fry chicken, cajun-style jambalaya and cold pasta salad. For dessert, the guests could choose from cookies, cheesecake, and watermelon. In all, approximately 70 people were served.

Although the temperature was hot, the ministry provided cooling areas and restrooms for the guests.

The event was a total success. During this pandemic, the Ministry wanted to provide an opportunity for many of the people in the community to come out, enjoy a meal and experience a little fellowship.   The evening ended with fireworks sponsored by  H.E.L.P.S. Ministry.

H.E.L.P.S. Ministry appreciates the partnership it has with Food For Friends.
