Food for Friends partnered with Together we are Elgin and City Councilman Corey Dixon to provide food and services to over 450 Elgin residents. Food For Friends provide delicious sandwiches wrapped in buns donated by Gonnella Baking. We served hot dogs and pulled pork sandwiches. The sandwiches were distributed as a brown bag meal with chips and a bottle of water.

Organizers were determined to not let COVID-19 be a reason for not holding the event this year. In fact, they thought it was even more important than ever before to provide the community with school supplies and food, just like in years past. This event was FREE to the public.

The event gave the community some time to celebrate the end of the Summer and the beginning of the new school year! The organizers focused their efforts on providing school supplies that are more conducive to virtual learning. In addition to school supplies, there was a limited supply of backpacks that were given out. Residents could also get free flu shots, sign up to vote, and were reminded about the census. Several local candidates were also present to answer questions and there were several people from local media.

Due to the pandemic and our responsibility of keeping people safe, the event was held in the form of a drive-through. This means that participants never left their car. They simply drove through the entire event to receive school supplies, a hot meal, and giveaways from our sponsors and vendors while listening to our DJ play your favorite hits.

Food For Friends volunteers, like all vendors, were socially distanced from each other and all of volunteers working the event were required to wear a face mask and gloves.

Thanks for all the volunteers who showed up to help serve at this event. We continue to be blessed with the generosity of our donors and volunteers and our ability to feed those in need.
