Event Recap: San Miguel Holiday Blue Bag

The following email came from Christina Chacon, Board Member – Food For Friends. We would like to thank Sesajal and Columbus Vegetable Oils who helped sponsor this event. And thanks also to the Chicago Rugby Club for volunteering for this event. For more pictures from this event, go to our album on Facebook titled 2020-12-12 San Miguel Holiday Event

On Saturday, December 12, 2020 Food For Friends partnered with San Miguel School in the Back of the Yard neighborhood to distribute 120 holiday bags to the families in the community.

We have held this event with San Miguel for many years. Traditionally, we provide a holiday sit down meal for the San Miguel families.   However, with the pandemic this year we had to change our plans. Since we were unable to provide a sit down meal we improvised to distributed Blue Bags with food items to make a holiday meal. While not as special as a sit down meal, we were able to connect with those receiving our gifts of food.

The Chicago Rugby Club, which helped us do a similar event around Thanksgiving, stepped in to assist with the pick up, assembly and distribution for the 120 families.  The club along with few other volunteers arrived in full force at San Miguel School.

The tables were assembled with food items.  All volunteers worked together to assemble and distribute the Blue Bags to the community.

Members of the Chicago Rugby Club volunteered at this event, assembling 120 Blue Bags.

In keeping with our policy for all serving events during the pandemic, all volunteers and the families picking up a holiday bag wore masks.  Everyone also practiced good social distancing. The goal here was to distribute food to families in need.

Despite the rain, families came on time and left happy with Blue Bags filled with a frozen Turkey, cooking oil, pasta, dry beans, canned corn, canned tomato sauce and atole (similar to hot chocolate).  The families were very thankful and said so many times to our volunteers.

Special thank you to Sesajal and Columbus Vegetable Oils, who provided funds to help sponsor this event.  Because of the resources provided by these companies we were able to bless 120 families with a holiday meal this season.  Thank you so much!

And thank you to all of the volunteers for taking the time to serve with Food For Friends.  I was overwhelmed by the number of helping hands and eagerness to participate.

Blessings ,

Christina Chacon, Board Member – Food For Friends
