The following email came from Joan Richards, Volunteer – Food For Friends. Thanks to Joan for this article, the pictures and for her volunteerism. For more pictures from this event, go to our album on Facebook titled 2021-01-17 HBInc for Homeless
On Sunday January 17th volunteers from Food for Friends and HB Inc. came together for the first time to collaborate on an event to serve the homeless on the South side.
Food For Friends Blue bags were packed with easy open canned goods and food items. The items included were Vienna sausage, V-8, canned chicken and tuna, fruit cocktail, applesauce, bottled water, and granola bars. We then packed and included two hot meals, catered by Lee and Eddies Catering. Those meals included turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, a roll and brownies.
Volunteers also packed blessing bags with personal care items such as socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, a warm scarf, soap, shampoo and other helpful items. These bags also included messages of hope and scripture. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever”. 1 Chronicles 16:34.
Once all the bags were packed, a caravan of vehicles formed and the volunteers drove the blessing and food bags to the tent cities on 51st and State, 17th and canal, and a few other stops in Chicago, IL.
In all, 50 homeless were blessed with two hot meals, a Blue Bag of food and a bag of personal care items, plus prayer and scripture.
The volunteers were blessed with their time together and their service to those in need. We at Food for Friends are thankful to have had this opportunity to serve with HB Inc, a group of friends and family that has spent 3 decades serving together. We also thank Music Box Foundation for the loan of their space to pack the meals and bags.
Our hearts are touched that we can come together even during a raging pandemic and serve those in our own neighborhood who are in need of support and prayer.
