November 20, 2020 Event Recap: The Middleby Corporation

On Friday, November 20, 2020 a Thanksgiving turkey and Blue Bag distribution event was held in Elgin, organized by the employees at The Middleby Corporation. The following is an article sent in by our contact there, Bernadette Rivera. Thanks to Bernadette for providing the article below and for all her organizational and coordination work on this event. On November 20, 2020, the employees of The Middleby Corporation collected and donated Thanksgiving meals for Huff Elementary, a school located in Elgin.

When we reached out to the administration at Huff to coordinate this year’s donation, they had a big ask of us and we were up for the challenge.  Huff has a group of families to which they provide weekly backpacks with food essentials, milk, eggs, rice, beans, etc.  Last year, there were 25 families that were taking home these backpacks and we donated the same amount of Thanksgiving blue bags to the school.  This year, Huff informed us that in 2020, there were more than double the number of families in this group and asked if it was at all possible for us to provide meals for the 60 families that are currently in that program.

Collecting and organizing all this was a bit more of a challenge this year since our company is currently in a partial remote working environment, but we were still able to shop, organize and pack all 60 meals for the school.  In order to control the number of individuals present at the school at one time and because they were not allowing anyone inside the school, Huff requested that we deliver the meals to their back loading dock, which is where the families were scheduled to pick up the meals later that afternoon.

Middleby would like to extend our gratitude to the Food for Friends organization for the donation of turkeys and blue bags for this year’s event and to the Middleby employees for their generous donations.  Through this amazing partnership, we were able to provide 60 complete Thanksgiving meals as well as grocery gift cards to the families of Huff Elementary, more than twice what was collected last year.

This Blue Bag Thanksgiving event remains one of our company’s favorite giving opportunities and we are so glad COVID didn’t stand in our way of coordinating this year. We look forward to many years of partnership with the Food for Friends organization!
