The following email came from the Linda Murphy. Linda is a new volunteer with Food For Friends and we thank her for the article. For more pictures from this event, go to our album on Facebook titled 2020-11-21 San Miguel
On Saturday, Nov. 21 Food for Friends were blessed to serve the 90 students and families of San Miguel school in the Back of the Yards community.
The event was coordinated by Linda Murphy, Joe Scanlan and Tina Kehagias along with their committed volunteers. This trio are new partners to Food For Friends and felt the calling to give more and to give big at Thanksgiving this year.
Christina Chacon, Board Member at Food For Friends, has been a good friend to San Miguel for many years. She was gracious to share her relationship with this most deserving school and community.
Christina and her daughter joyfully greeted 2 white vans that were filled with 200 bags of food along with 22+ pound turkeys to serve the families!
All of the volunteers jumped out and were also eager to give and help any way they could to all waiting in line to receive food.
As the volunteers began to unload the vans, they all quickly realized this would not be a drive by event. This would be a walk up event as our guests all lived in the neighborhood.
All Covid-19 safe protocols were taken to keep everyone distant but we were still able to connect with our special guests in a way that is hard to describe. It turned out to be a socially distant, but very personal meet and greet to some of the most deserving and appreciative students and families.
As our guests took possession of the turkey and the Blue Bag, they realized. based on the weight of the bags, how much food they were getting. Our guests were definitely committed to receiving the food because walking home with this big of a bird was a delight for them no matter how heavy the bags were !!!
The Food For Friends Blue Bags were filled with everything the family needed for a bunch of side dishes, including a box of instant potatoes, stuffing mix, gravy, cranberry sauce, cake mix, gelatin mix, cans of corn, green beans, yams and a box of hot cocoa.
The sun was shining – it was a joyful day and in about 35 minutes – all 200 families were served! As they all walked away, you could just see everyone smiling and happy, truly grateful to have received our gift of food.
