At Calmeca Academy in Brighton Park, Chicago, this spirit of community is brought to life in a very tangible way through the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive in partnership with Food For Friends, which has now been a tradition for five years running.
This year, we served 215 families. With the help of over 35 volunteers to help pack blue bags filled with essential food items and distribute 14-16 lb turkeys to families. The food donations included everything from mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green beans, to yams, rice, and homemade cookies—a full spread to make sure that every family could enjoy a warm and festive meal.
At Calmeca, the mission is clear: to help every student become bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate—values that are ingrained in the very fabric of the school. This Thanksgiving event reflects those values, reminding everyone involved of the power of compassion and commitment to others. It’s not just about providing a meal; it’s about creating lasting bonds that strengthen the community for generations to come.
With support from Food For Friends as committed partners, we continue to create a strong sense of community, responsibility and solidarity for anyone in need at Thanksgiving and beyond.
